The London Chinese Chamber Ensemble
Based in London, England, we perform for the major chinese cultural festivals exploring traditional ancient repertoire (over 1500 years old); classical repertoire (last 500 years); contemporary 19th century chinese repertoire and current repertoire on ethnic chinese instruments.
We have a diverse membership from many countries and nationalities. Most of us are solo instrumentalists who perform with a western instrument and bring diaspora interest into the repertoire which we play; some of our ensemble members are enthusiast players who join to grow their ensemble skills and performance experience and others are session musicians or visitors who join from time to time.
From March 2024 we will be running bamboo flute [dizi] and erhu [2 string chinese fiddle] workshops for newcomers at our home base in Bloomsbury [London]. Interested learners and newcomers to chinese instruments welcome. If you happen to be interested in the non-pop side of chinese music repertoire, drop us a line.

Influences
As an ensemble our influences are as diverse as the members who come. We are also solo instrumentalists in our own field and teach dizi/xiao flute; erhu (string fiddle); the chinese pear shaped lute (the pipa) and classical guitar. We have an active erhu [string section]; a liuqin section [willow leaf lute] and recruiting second dizi flute players.
We work primarily in English although every ensemble member is bilingual or multilingual and fluent in reading western and chinese music notation (percussionists clearly don't have this requirement!).
