Looking to form a new rock/metal band in Glasgow. I’m left cold by a lot of modern music having no personality. It seems to me that (particularly) in modern metal so many bands sound identical to each other. I don’t like the modern prog/laptop/guitar nerd stuff. I’m inspired by the spirit of a lot of stuff I grew up with in the 90s and am interested in forming a band that wants to explore and develop a distinctive sound, moving away from the modern airbrushed clinical sound without being retro.
I am a guitarist with hundreds of gigs under my belt and good equipment. In this band I’d like to focus on big riffs and soundscaping. Looking for a bassist, a solid drummer who can play for the song without shredding on the drums constantly, a vocalist that is capable of having a distinctive sound (ie not cookie cutter shouting/growling/tough guy vocals) and a synth player that is able to play real synths live (ie not just trigger a laptop) and manipulate sounds/trigger samples on the fly.
I hate the idea of naming bands that would be influences as I don’t want to imply that they are the style I want to play, but to give you an idea of where I’m coming from I like the hugeness of neurosis, the mechanical sounds of the wax trax bands, the emotion of godflesh, the lushness of cocteau twins, the power of 90s “industrial metal” and the avoidance of politics. I’m imagining big, thick, saggy guitars, cutting bass, that high pitched snare sound (i can’t be the only one that misses that “crack” on the snare?), thick squelchy alive sounding synths and an urban, almost machine like atmosphere. But a living machine.
I like the idea of jamming out ideas and developing songs in the rehearsal room with everyone’s input.
It’s important to me that lyrics would be quite abstract and more about painting a picture than addressing real world, personal or political “issues”. I don’t see the band as being a soapbox that is “trying to make a difference”.
I’ve somehow made this description simultaneously specific and vague but that’s kind of where I’m at with it - if this all sounds good to you then let’s get together and see what we can create.
I’m 38 and would imagine most of my references would be best understood by people of a similar age but age/gender doesn’t matter to me.
If you’re interested then message me.
Cheers.
