As a bass player, Tool are the band that convinced me to make the switch over to bass some years ago. Most of my primary bass influences are from modern prog/tech metal bands, where the bass is very groovy, very bright sounding and clearly present in the mix. Bands such as TesseracT, Periphery, Haken, Karnivool and Intervals influence the kind of approach to both technique and sound I aim for.

My workhorse instrument is an Ibanez SR405EQM-SLG. Which is a 5 string bass with two active humbucker pickups, 3 band EQ with boost and cut capabilities in the pots.
I run effects through a ZOOM B3 multi-effects processor with patches and signal chains set up for a broad variety of genres. The multi-effects processor goes through the effects loop of my Fender Rumble 100 combo amp. It has enough power to fill a small venue, and any shortfalls in its wattage can be made up for with its DI out into a venue's PA system. I have recently acquired a Darkglass Alpha Omega Ultra distortion pedal with 6 band EQ to really craft a tone. I chase a sound that has bottom end girth with some bite in the upper mids. A bass tone very familiar with modern prog players. I now use a Darkglass Super Symmetry compressor for keeping my bass sound even in the mix.

I also have an Ibanez GSR200B which I generally have tuned down to C standard if I ever need to play something metal \m/
