ABOUT

Dewaan is a journey, a dream, a passion shared by three individuals Amir, Emanuel and Suki. All this started when Amir met Emanuel in 2008 while performing at a gig in London. The two began jamming and performing together ever since.
Rapid popularity amongst the mainstream UK Asian music scene gave Amir and Emanuel the realisation of their potential that sets them apart. The two then began focusing on their creativity which reflected their cultural heritage combined with the contemporary western music. It was in 2009 that this journey , full of ideas and creativity was given the name “Dewaan”.

The band Dewaan was further diversified with the fortunate inclusion of a hard core Indie rock guitarist called Sukhi, who embarked on this journey two years ago.

Dewaan is a symbol of diversity deep rooted in tradition. This is apparent from the 3 main members that come from different backgrounds. Sukhi (Basist and Percussion Guitarist) comes with a indie-rock guitar background, having played and performed with rock bands over the last 10 years. Amir (Lead Guitarist) has spent the last 7 years playing both in the UK and Pakistan with various bands. However, like any aspiring South Asian musician, Amir has played and performed in Punjabi, Urdu and Hindi covering popular music of various genres. Emanuel (Vocalist) grew up in Pakistan and during his teens, was inspired by pop/rock bands of that time in the country, but meanwhile, developed interest in semi-classical/traditional school of singing. Over the last few years, Emanuel received hardcore semi-classical vocal training and used that as a fundamental concept to mix with the diverse popular experience that Amir and Sukhi bring to the band.

Therefore, as a band, they feel they have the best of both worlds. Whilst the musical arrangement in their songs is a clever combination of western percussions, guitar and harmonies, the lyrics and melodies dominantly reflect Eastern sentiments embedded in classical poetry, philosophic articulation and meditative magic of raggas. Hence, this is why, they choose "Dewaan" as the name of their band.

The word Dewaan was used to describe the courtyard where all the musicians used to gather and perform before Mughal Emperors .
Based in London Dewaan is now actively completing its first album and looking for a potential label (Phew!!!!!!). Their music is about bringing together vast emotions, knitted through a diverse range of ideas and energy that adds to the value of South Asian popular music. This is what makes them distinguishable, less patronised but simultaneously, connected with their roots.
