ABOUT
The Amateur Dramatics are one of the most dynamic and unusual bands to emerge from the incandescent Sunderland scene in the past year. Having previously featured members of the Futureheads and Field Music, the band combine a minimalist, post-punk sound with elements of cabaret. Frontman Peter Stebbing is a whirlwind of neurotic energy, at times charming and joking, at others furious and screaming insults. The overall effect is a sound halfway between Jonathan Richman and The Cure, distorted and twisted by Sunderland's unique musical filter. Their standout track - Television - comes across as a disturbing mix of The Velvet Underground and Bright Eyes, spat out, rather than sang, in a vicious Mackem accent. Gaining favourable reviews for their first self-released Television EP, garnering Radio 1 airplay, and having supported The Futureheads, The Golden Virgins and Maximo Park, the band are currently preparing material for a forthcoming album.
