ABOUT

It started on the 09:32 out of Newcastle, all headache, bacon butty wrappers and the smell of regret. A stag weekend had levelled them: too many trebles, too much dancing, too many pints they didn’t need. Heads pressed against train windows, sunglasses on despite the grey drizzle, they sat in silence until someone – no one remembers who – muttered:

“We should start a band.”

The idea caught like dry tinder. A half-joke at first, the sort of nonsense you say after two nights without proper sleep. But then the details came out, like confessions. Sean had a guitar at home gathering dust. Marc had played piano in school until his mum said he was “too loud for a terrace.” Tom still had his bass from uni. John Joe said he could sing — not karaoke-drunk shouting, but actually sing.

Hungover minds turned to scheming. Four months. That was the deadline. In four months they’d be on stage somewhere, anywhere, playing their first gig. The train carriage became their boardroom. They scribbled setlist ideas on the back of a Greggs receipt. Someone googled “local rehearsal rooms” on patchy 4G. Someone else promised to design a logo. The pact was made between sips of lukewarm water and strong coffee: they’d swap pints for practice, at least a couple of nights a week.

And they stuck to it. Practices were rough at first, more arguments than rhythm, but week by week the noise became songs. The hungover dream hardened into something real. By the time four months had passed, they were crammed into the corner of a pub back home, sweating under too-bright lights, playing to mates, girlfriends, and a couple of curious strangers. It wasn’t perfect — but it was theirs.

From then on, the story wrote itself. What began as a throwaway train-ride idea, a joke between blokes with sore heads, became a band. And the rest, as they say, is history.
