ABOUT

Hey, so I am looking to form a band that does a mix of originals and covers. I have some material, looking to do a kind of Americana-ish thing. Kinda American 70's classic rock like the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac kind thing of but also taking in those American bands /artists in the early nineties that weren't grunge like Nineties R.E.M, Soul Asylum, Tori Amos, Counting Crows, The Connells etc. But equally love Motown soul, neo jazz, fusion. I think a lot of what I do could be adapted that way too.

In terms of production quality the stuff I have recorded is demo-worthy only. Stick it amongst tracks that have been produced and mastered to highest standards and it doesn’t sit well in terms of volume mastering and mix. I think it could be so much better live be one day recorded to highest standards. But every wannabe songwriter thinks that!

But it's not by any means a dyed in the wool band idea yet. It might go another way completely if we get together and sound different to that.

I have material that is kind of in that vein but never recorded it properly with the exception of one or two. I have uploaded several tracks here but the tracks I have in mind for this band I don't have great versions of.

I do have properly recorded and produced tracks from the indie rock band I did in the early noughties. I've put some of those up too for reference. I think Bandmix has actually selected one of those as the main track.

I dunno if what I do is any good, I am too close to it. So don't feel like I am steadfast that we have to do these tracks or that you can't say, nah I'm not feeling it kind of thing.

Great if you have original material too! Definitely the more the merrier. I'm a vocalist and an acoustic guitar / rhythm guitarist but I would like a female front vocalist as I think my voice works better with a female voice.

You would be the main front person in my head, but I guess it would be about 60 /40 me and you on the vocals somethin like that. Equally, if other members of the band want to lead on vocals on tracks then that would be cool too. The approach would be very egalitarian. That's kind of how I see it in my head, but it's totally flexible and down to what works best for the song and the band.

I would say I am at an intermediate level on guitar but I learned intuitively. I don't come from a theoretical starting point. Great if you do or don't! Whatever works.

Just a little bit about me too so you know what sort of person I am. I have a neurodivergent diagnosis, and I have a fairly long history of mental health stuff that orbits around that, mainly anxiety and depression. So Just a note that if that might be difficult or triggering for anyone. I totally get that.

I am pretty normal in person (to the extent any of us are) but every now and again, I will fail to understand the social context. I.E I might not get humour, sort of thing. It doesn't happen very often. But it can happen. I am completely fine with anyone taking the p*** when I'm slow to catch on. In fact I reckon that's a good thing.

Also, I know I can come across as a bit of a posh lad and a bit up myself. I can see that a bit in that YouTube clip of me busking Sam Fender I've put here. When that happens, that is actually me feeling nervous and trying to fit in with everyone.

It can also happen on social media. I tend to write way more than I need to and bang on a bit! I just want to say that it's not arrogance as that is how it has been seen in the past. It's just me being a bit different. So yeah i'm a bit of an odd fish, but like Gizmo out of Gremlins, as long as you don't tip a paint brush jar of water on me etc, we'll be grand!

n.b I'm a left-hander who plays right handed

Cheers!

Influences

See above but many, many more. sixties onwards really. All and everything, everywhere, all at once. Very broad minded when it comes to music. Last gig was Khurangbin who were immense. Blew me away. All time favourite gig was Bon Iver.

Members Of Band

Female front vocalist (would be a kind of Fleetwood Mac thing where the front person would mainly be the female vocalist but I would do a fair bit of top line singing too along with backing vocals
Keyboard /piano player
Drummer /percussionist
bassist
lead guitar
Second rhythmn guitar
seem like essentials
But don't be shy if you play something else, it's all up for grabs.

EQUIPMENT

At the moment....I only have an acoustic, as I had to sell most of my gear over the years but I have mates / family I can borrow gear from. The more gear you have the better but at this stage you of course don't need to be fully kitted out or virtuoso, it isn't massively complicated music. It's more about whether we work as people as is always the case. I'm thinking when / if we are ready we don't do loads of gigs (maybe one or two a month) but just see how we get on! It's all early doors! : )
