ABOUT

I am a 20 year old uni student at Leeds who is very keen to join a band and get into live performing at some point.

I have a history in playing brass instruments since around 8 years old. Growing up, I have done hundreds of concerts, competitions, marching gigs and carolling with brass bands, primarily on the Euphonium (which I have since moved to playing trumpet). At 14, I performed in the Birmingham Symphony Hall with my brass band. My favourite genres on the trumpet are jazz, latin/son cubano and brass repertoire.

I have also been playing the piano for several years now and play classical music (e.g. Beethoven, Chopin), Queen songs, pop, anime theme songs, a little jazz and whatever songs I just fancy learning. For the last few years, this has been my primary instrument.

From around 12 - 16 I had a period of composing, where I wrote the best part of 30/40 piano pieces, inspired by classical, folk and film music. The early work was expectedly very dreadful but towards the end, the pieces definitely improved a lot and my creativity of ideas and concept of structure and storytelling developed (along with using more, lets say 'conventional' harmonies) . I would love to get back into composing, preferably in a wider variety of genres and with a deeper music theory understanding.

Over the last year, I have developed an extreme liking to guitar (acoustic and electric). I can't get my hands off it. I have acquired a love for rock music and am learning songs including Rock n Roll - Led Zeppelin, Built by nations - Greta Van Fleet, Black magic woman - Santana. I am really excited to join a band so I can have the opportunity to play my new favourite genre - rock - with other musicians and avoid just being a bedroom musician, since I believe playing with others is a crucial element of being a proper musician.

The majority of my musical experience has been performance based so I have developed skills in learning new songs, focussing intensely on tone. Additionally, playing in a brass band has allowed (slash forced) me to be strict on rhythm, timing and listening to the band to play with a tone that resonates with the other instruments instead of clashing.

However, I have limited abilities with respect to improvisation since most of my playing (with brass and piano) has been from reading sheet music and playing verbatim.

Over the last year, I have been studying a lot of music theory and have gained a much better understanding of harmony, chord progressions and song structure.

This being said, I would be lying if I said my improv abilities in all instruments as of right now don't completely suck. That is, however, something I am keen on continuing to learn and have ambitions to be able to gain a deeper music theory knowledge, develop improvisational skills and improve on song-writing.

I would love to be a guitarist for a band but would also be willing to play other instruments if wanted.

I would also be up to play with a band of any experience/skill level as I, above all, just want to get into playing with other musicians so am in no way picky with that regard since this will be my first time joining a non-brass band.
