ABOUT

I think music can describe oneself in ways that are perhaps a little more subtle. I believe that musical tastes may be a reflection of one's values, whether they be political, personal, cultural, or familial, and we can learn a lot about people based on the kind of music they listen to. You tend to associate yourself with certain kinds of communities and groups based on your musical preferences, dress a certain way, speak a certain way, and potentially act a certain way, depending on the music you are listening to in a given situation. I wouldn't say music defines or dictates how we behave, but we seek out the kind of music that supports our personality or what we are doing at the time (think going to clubs to dance to rap or hip hop, or listening to classical to study, or yelling "Don't stop believing" in the car with friends). However, what is the effect of any one style of music on a person is extremely difficult to refine, seeing as most people listen to many, many different styles of music, never mind the diversity of music within any one kind of genre. Our musical tastes are constantly evolving, which is normal seeing as we are constantly evolving over time.

It's an interesting conversation and a difficult one to agree upon, but that's my opinion in a nutshell.
