The first two tracks below, One For John and Last Time Around (copyright Bull/Renbourn) were recorded with John for an album that didn’t get completed (both are dry i.e. no reverb or final mix etc) which may finally see the light of day on my pending ‘Lost Tapes’ album. For legal reasons I cannot elaborate further at this stage but it resulted in me ‘turning amateur’ getting a belated education and becoming a lecturer. They were recorded back in the day when the black and white photo of me and John was taken. This was used recently for a show previewed at Ventnor Festival ‘Remembering John Renbourn’ recounting his influence on the 60s folk/blues boom featuring material from his first two LPs. The third track, Harvest Home/Spanish Ladies is a medley that was a mainstay of my folk club repertoire which features in a work in progress for a concept album and musical comedy review. The fourth track, New Man Blues (copyright Bull) is a live recording by my alter ego come multiple personality disorder Travis T. Merle which afflicted me following retirement from academe. This was supposed to be the soundtrack to my second big break after a sell out run at Melbourne Comedy Festival and two Australian TV appearances … followed by open heart surgery resulting in me ‘turning amateur’ again! So, as the saying goes, third time lucky. The Renbourn retrospective is on the back burner for the time being but I may be looking for collaborators on the concept album come musical comedy revue.
