ABOUT

Ben is an exciting, young, British saxophonist who has and displays an interest in many types and styles of music. Because of this he is not content just adhere to the more traditional lines and accepted avenues of contemporary jazz. He is quickly becoming the well-rounded performer his early promise implied. Always ready to experiment, his improvisation is performed with excitement and energy and at times his 'take no prisoners' approach guarantees that whatever the occasion is it will never be dull. A 'comfort zone' player he is not.

Ben's sound is one of his greatest facets in its individuality of in tone and brightness in attack. His method in finding a good sound is to think of the instrument as a voice and so he spends a lot of time listening to his favourite vocalists. Ben achieves a high quality of control whether he is playing the Soprano, Alto or Tenor Saxophone demonstrated best when improvising with busy, quick passages often balanced out with slow sustained notes or phrases that are a key mark.

Influences

Although at heart Ben is a 'jazzer' his wide ranging taste in music also includes Rock, Classical, Pop and Electronic while my influences vary from Hank Mobley to Dexter Gordon to Coutrney Pine and from rock bands suc as the The Arctic Monkeys, Placebo and Athlete. He is a musician who entertains, challenges, teases and plays with the concept of "what is jazz?"

Ben's main passion is improvising so he approaches any music with this in mind using styles or genres of music as a basis for extemporisation and creativity. His solos are all about passion, belief and the idea of trying to go beyond oneself which comes over in performances. His presentation of tunes is creative, highly emotional yet with clear direction and his arranging style shows forms of orginality which are always progressing.
