I had a few classical guitar lessons from Mr Battine at Ottershaw boarding School.
A friend persuaded me that playing bass in his band would be easy compared to Spanish Guitar.
We formed RITA and rehearsed in Busbridge village hall with Nick Gurney on Guitar, Bruce Foxton on other Guitar and me on Bass. We were joined by multiple drummers until we found Andre Dubois. Bruce left to join THE JAM
We then joined a singer called Ann Preston to tour US military bases in Germany as KOCKROACH.
After nine months we returned to the UK, changed our name to STAMPS and were joined by Dave Martin on vocals.
This line up toured as support to Flintlock in major venues, went back to Munich twice to the PN club and signed to Hansa, a German record company, but never released a record.
In 1978 Nick Gurney, having met his wife, left the band and I went to work in the Jet Petrol station.
I got a phone call from Neil Whittaker a drummer my sister knew from her student days in Brighton.
We joined a couple of Yorkshire men in a band called the JAGS, signed to Island records, had a hit record, did two UK tours, TV, radio and festivals in the UK and Holland.
In April 1980 I was replaced on the eve of a US tour. (We had a high court injunction on our managers and made no money.)
Named after Nicks Gurney’s brothers wife
A Boyhood dream turned flesh.
A step in the wrong direction,
Punk happened while we were away in Germany.
Like a pop group .A good idea in theory,
Fronted by a man from the Italia Conti acting school
who pulled women like a barman pulls pints.
Thatcher’s boys too early to the party,
All flash suits and superficial lyrics.
Aptly named after a fast car.
It was fun while it lasted.
