ABOUT

Although essentially a rock band that uses elements of the darker side of traditional folk music for inspiration, Silver Dogs also draw heavily on ambient styles with influences as wide ranging as Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, Terry Riley and Pink Floyd. This is particularly noticeable in Crazy Man Michael, King Cotton and their recreation of the traditional version of A Sailor’s Life in particular, as well as in sections of many other songs. The band also includes a number of original songs in the set and a selected number of covers by legendary songwriters such as Sandy Denny, Lal Laterson and Richard Thompson.
This led to the recruitment of an eclectic group of top quality musicians with a common aim – take traditional and contemporary folk songs and morph them into a distinctive Silver Dogs sound that was commercial but unlike previous English folk rock bands.

INFLUENCES
Although the band experimented at various times with elements of prog rock, jazz, funk and even acoustic punk(!), the classic Silver Dogs sound has gravitated towards ambient rock, grounded in twin leads of guitar and violin, rooted in a solid rhythm section, cemented by keyboards and fronted by powerful female vocals.

SILVER DOGS LIVE
The band’s live set is built around treatments of traditional songs and the darker stories and legends, plus a number of more contemporary offerings from writers such as Sandy Denny, Lal Waterson and Antje Duvekot (the US singer/songwriter who gifted the band the powerful and controversial song, Poisonjester’s Mask).
