Influences

My influences are extremely diverse from Punk/Art-rock to Jazz. I started out in the mid to late 70's playing Lead guitar for the South Wales punk band "The Tax EXiles" But moved into post punk/Electronica/experimental. then into Soul Jazz Funk and Jazz in time. So! I have been into a lot of different styles of playing. But my Jazz influences range from Talking Heads to Miles Davis, From Bill Nelson to John Cale from Brian Eno to The Clash, to Herbie Hancock and George Benson. Martin Taylor, Tony Bennett, Sinatra. I love composers and arrangers like Gil Evans and Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. I took Jazz studies under Welsh Bassist and composer Paula Gardiner at the Cardiff University of life long learning. And had private guitar tuition with Welsh Jazz Guitarist and composer Dylan Fowler. I like to improvise as well as playing tighter written arrangements and chords charts as well as open Jamming and experimentation and free Jazz. I have thought about taking the frets out of an old guitar of mine I like guitarists that are experimental and progressive in their attitude. John Mcloughlin when he played with Shakti, and on his an early recording "My Goals Beyond" He used an acoustic Guitar with scolloped fret board and drone strings to get that Indian Raga sound. I Also love Pat Metheny who has fantastic Ideas. Like the "Piccasso" Guitar wich has 24 strings which has a fretted and fretless necks. Also he has different tunings which are advanced, I like the searching thing in music and the sophistication of Jazz harmony as well as modal tonalities. John Coltrane and Pharoe Saunders used a lot of middle eastern ideas in their free Jazz forms. I also like finger style Jazz Guitar players like Martin Taylor, Joe Pass, and love Big Band sound of Duke Ellington and Count Basie. I am an open minded and searching Musician. Having said that I am not just into the muso technical thing I also like minimilist experimentation. And I have a very good facility on my Instruments I play/Practice mostly every day.
