After a break-up I bought a boat and started living on it. Instead of the film music I had been creating, songs started flowing out influenced by the cold, by the storms, and beautiful summer days.
In this stark insular environment me and my old acoustic guitar started to explore the 1930’s blues and folk of Fred McDowell, Bukka White and the Carter family, as well as my old country favourites Hank Williams and Uncle Tupelo.
But I also couldn't ignore my love of melody and noise: Kate Bush and Rufus Wainwright clashed with the more abrasive sounds of Nirvana and My Bloody Valentine.
From this point the aim has been to make the quieter stuff as beautiful as possible and the rougher sounds as rawer. Deal in extremes. Sometimes within the same song.
Since that formative time on my boat I've become an obsessive songwriter with a brutal work ethic - time is short and there's lots to do, experience and write about.
Influenced by Joe Meek and being broke, I record, mix and release everything myself as creatively and as cheaply as possible. Songs are recorded on the boat, in toilets, hallways, in friend's front rooms.
ATM it's myself as singer and elec/acoustic guitarist and Steve on bass and acoustic guitar.
