After seeing a mind-blowing banjo player in 2007, I decided to take it up myself. I'm 100% self-taught and played a lot of gigs around the Midlands between 2008 and 2012. I taught abroad from 2012 to 2019 and played in Thailand, Russia, and Spain. After the pandemic, I moved to Belfast, where I currently live. Playing the banjo is my main occupation, although I also do digital art.
I own three banjos. I was extremely lucky and was gifted two of them by Chris Ayliffe, a talented guitarist in the folk scene. He gifted me an 'S.S. Steward' banjo from the 1880s, which gives a beautiful 'American Civil War' type of sound. I was also given a 1920s English banjo, which fills a room with its sound.
I play mostly Appalachian music, but I also do a bit of classical, bluegrass, ragtime, rock, and anything else I fancy, really! I'm open to doing any kind of performance, weddings, historical events, sessions, or gigs.
